Why Create An Online Course?
Why Make An Online Course?
Before we get stuck into the core of the course, there is a need for us to take moment to discover our WHY.
Going back in time a little, before I jumped into the river of Online Course with my two feet, I had to discover my own why.
Why do I want to do this?
Why do I want to choose this as a life mission?
How bad do I really want this?
Here is my story:
Though I am a chartered supply chain manager; professional marketer; public speaker, among many other skills, my expenses just seems to always find a way to be ahead of my income.
I got into a little debt, and then it became large. At a point, my debt profile was close to N1 million. Many a time, I felt like just packing it up and ending it there.
There was a time my kids were sent back from school, beaten physically and battered emotionally. We had not completed the payment of last term fee, and that of the current term was due. I had to quickly rush home when my son called me using a borrowed phone.
As much as I tried, I couldn’t come up with the needed cash. To cut the story, they had to stay back at home for the rest of the term.
Bad story told with laughter (that is a statement in my native language).
You can imagine my children arguing with each other with me trying to keep them calm so neighbours will not get to know they were at home. I felt so helpless. I felt I have let them down. I felt so sorry for bringing my beautiful wife into this mess. So many months of serving food without any ‘bump’ in the soup – none in any way!
I had seen the powerful prospect of internet marketing at work. I had learnt a lot from my Grand Mentor, Sunny Ojeagbase. Though I didn’t take steps on time.
The likes of Akin Alabi, Olatunde Samson, Ronald etc were also groomed by him. But the difference was that they took steps to act on their knowledge immediately.
The wind of life actually dealt with me.
During one of those days, I reached out to a young guy living in the city who had made some good money in sales, asking him to mentor me. When he discovered my financial state, he told me my finance sucks, and wouldn’t pick my calls again.
Then I made up my mind, for the sake of my beautiful wife and kids, this must work!
That became my WHY.
I can’t afford to see them suffer! I will rather die! So I started working with it. I started packaging information products in various formats for sale online. I also acquired web design skills, went into web hosting, I literally threw myself into it. One thing though that will not leave me is my passion for teaching people (see, I am actually a teacher, not a marketer)
In 2014, I met a young guy in Iree, Osun State called Steve. I taught him website design, and I also showed him some basic marketing stunts I have learnt from the feet of many marketing masters. His online business took a flight, and in few months, he announced to me he was relocating to Lagos.
How come? What happened? I came from Lagos, and I know what it costs to live in Lagos! Then he showed me his result.
While I was selling my knowledge as ebooks and in other formats, he set up an online learning platform where people can pay him as low as N3,500 per month, each staying in school and paying him for 6 months. As at that time, he was having over 1,000 students in his “online school”!
My brain quickly crunched out the figures: N3,500 x 1,000 students. Holy Jeezzz. That’s 3.5M monthly!
I swallowed my pride and I asked him to show me what I needed to know. Now, the story is different.
I have dedicated myself since then to study the working, business and technical aspect of Online Courses. I have used every platform possible to run my online course. I know what works. I know what does not work.
I have gone beyond building a training course, and being there compulsorily in order to facilitate it. I have discovered how to host your training once, and people can come from any part of the world, at any time to pay for it without speaking with you. The only thing you hear is the sound of alerts on your phone.
Now, talking about you. You have to discover your own why.
Why do you want to do this?
Why do you want to choose this as a life mission?
How bad do you really want this?
Do you want it so bad, that you cannot stand not having it?
Until it gets to this level, you might not make anything great out of this!
There are several reasons why you might want to create an online course:
1. Financial: Creating an online course allows you to start earning ‘passive’ income.
You only have to make your course once in order to get paid over and over again (even while you sleep) with each new person that joins. And because you can reach so many more people, you can potentially earn a lot of money. It’s not uncommon for course creators to make N100k+ per month, and many earn a lot more.
It helps to build authority and credibility, positioning you as an expert in your field.
3. Making An Impact
Perhaps you aren’t just in it for the money. You also want to help people out and make a big positive impact on the world. There’s a lot of satisfaction that comes from being able to help people.
Whatever, you need to discover YOUR OWN WHY, if you want to sell a million.
I love you.
